The Elements of a Website

Web design goes far beyond going to a free hosting service and using their online page builder to build a website. These are sites that are good for beginners, but they will not suffice for a business. This is because they lack many of the elements that are required for business websites. The first thing they lack is an actual domain name. The domain name that is usually issued is a sub domain of the website whose service you are using. For example, you go to www.abc.com and sign up for free hosting. Your web address will then be www.abc.com/xyzcompany. That is an address that is hard for people to find. You want an address that is going to be your company name and not something that is behind the name of another company. They also put ads on your page to keep their service free.

What you want is an actual website that is professionally done. You want your graphics and text to go where you want. With free sites, you are given boxes to place your graphics and text without a lot of flexibility. This isn’t going to work. Another thing about free sites is that they take away from a business’s credibility because anyone can have a free site whether they’re legitimate or not. Yes, it is true that anyone can purchase a domain name, but fraud is less likely because everyone must register their domain with ICANN, which is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. All contact information must be 100% accurate by law. This is how having an actual domain can tell users that you are legitimate. Free websites are not required to register the domain with ICANN.

As for what is in a website, you know that there is text and there are graphics. However, there can be much more than that. You can have shopping carts, media files, interactive games, registration forms, and so much more. You can make your website something that people won’t want to leave once they are there. The idea is to get them so invested in what it is you are offering that they cannot resist making a purchase from you or signing up for your services. You want to develop an emotional connection with them. Without that emotional connection, they will just leave your page.

Other items that are in a website include:

  • Navigation systems that take users to multiple pages with multiple purposes
  • Search engine optimization techniques. This means that certain keywords relevant to your product or service will be incorporated into the text so that search engines can read your page and index you. The idea is to be one of the first sites people see when searching for your products or services.
  • Browser compatibility is also something you will find if your site appears the same no matter what browser you’re using.
With websites, the sky is the limit. If you need to, you can hire an IT company to take care of all of your design needs so that you can focus on other business aspects.
